Can be a drastic change of tempo, change of lyrics, (possibly humorous or a parody), up to you, but to put your own unique stamp on the song rather than a good replica!
Here is a fine example, a video from Triple Trouble, a band I saw in Bali, with a rocked up version of Sweet Caroline
Another example, The Beatles had Ringo sing 'With a little help from my friends' on the Sergeant Pepper's Club Band Album
Joe Cocker then had an explosive Number 1 global hit with his version with a much changed tempo, almost turned it into a different song.
Likewise, The Animals had a big hit with "We gotta get out of this place", referring to Eric Burdon's home town of Newcastle. The Angels came out with a much faster version, which I prefer as a dance song.
Then there are changes of lyrics to an existing melody. Often they are parodies of the original lyrics.
For example, Bart Baker made a hit by lewding up the lyrics of Gangnam Style by Psy, turning it into 'Condom Style'. Warning. It's not very PC! Here is the parody, Condom Style 57 million views!
LoiseE has entered a couple of songs in this category, one a revved up rock version of 'Bad Blood' by Tayor Swift, for example. And Rewind2Play have changed the lyrics of '6 Days on the Road' to '6 Days in Ibiza'
